The Wulai hot spring day tour, and the rating problem
Waterfall, gondola, old street and a soak, nine hours from Taipei for $106. It is the only bookable way to see Wulai without solving the bus yourself — and it carries 3.8 stars, the weakest in our table.
Our verdict — OTHER TOWN
A different town, and a weak rating. Wulai is genuinely worth seeing — better scenery than Beitou by a wide margin. But at 3.8 across seven reviews this specific product is the least well-rated thing we list, and bus 849 from Xindian does the same journey for pocket change.
The assessment · 01 — what we can and cannot tell you
We have not taken this tour, and this is not a review
This page is built from the operator's own listing, the verified review base on the booking platform, and the cost of doing the same thing independently. We do not write first-person accounts of tours we have not been on.
Why it is in a Beitou survey at all
Because "Beitou or Wulai" is a real question and we would rather answer it than pretend the other town does not exist. Wulai has the waterfall, the gorge and the indigenous food; Beitou has the bathing and the metro.
The rating, honestly
3.8 across seven reviews. Both numbers are weak — a low average on a small sample. That is not enough to call the operator poor, and it is more than enough to stop us calling this WORTH IT.
The alternative that costs almost nothing
Metro to Xindian, bus 849, about 40 minutes, running roughly every 15 minutes and taking an EasyCard. Door to door from central Taipei is around 70 minutes. That is the honest competitor to a $106 ticket.

Book it, or don't
Book it if
- You want Wulai without planning the bus
- You are short on time and long on budget
- The gondola and waterfall are the specific draw
- You would not otherwise leave Taipei at all
Skip it if
- You can manage a metro and one bus — it is genuinely easy
- You want the best-rated thing on our list
- You are chasing hot spring bathing rather than scenery — Beitou wins
- You have half a day rather than a full one
Against our own interest — we are paid if you book this
What we earn, and what to weigh it against
We earn a commission on this and we have given it our second-lowest verdict. The reason is the number: 3.8 is the weakest rating in our table and we are not going to bury it under photographs of a waterfall. Wulai is worth a day. Whether this specific ticket is worth $106 when bus 849 exists is a question we would answer no to for most people.
Questions · 04
The Wulai hot spring day tour, answered
Is the Wulai hot spring day tour worth it?
It is the only packaged way to see Wulai in a day, but it carries 3.8 stars across seven reviews — the weakest rating in our tour table — and the same journey is a metro ride to Xindian plus bus 849, about 40 minutes and payable with an EasyCard.
How do you get to Wulai without a tour?
Metro to Xindian at the end of the green line, then bus 849, roughly 40 minutes, departing about every 15 minutes and accepting EasyCard. A taxi from Xindian is around NT$600 one way.
Is Wulai better than Beitou?
For scenery yes — an eighty-metre waterfall, a river gorge and a gondola. For bathing no: Wulai has essentially no public bathhouse, only private rooms and hotel day-use, and it is double the travel time.
Have you taken this tour?
No, and we say so at the top of the page. This is an assessment built from the operator's listing, the verified review base and the cost of the independent alternative.
